I received the question about how to tip for our support staff during the Bolandcycletour and Tourdeboland. Here goes. It’s very simple, we share on a pro-rata basis among all support staff members.
Tipping in South Africa
In South Africa we tip 10% or more of the value of the service, ie restaurant meal or private excursion, where you have received good service. Our support staff are here to look after you, first and foremost to keep you safe, but also to ensure you are having fun and getting to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Boland and Western Cape Winelands on your bicycle.
A real-life example: In local restaurants, for large tables that are usually defined as 8 persons or more, they often add an automatic tip to the amount of 10, 12 or 15% of the total bill.
How do we operate at Cyclotourism?
It takes a team, not just an individual.
We try to be as open and transparent as possible when it comes to tipping and share it on a pro-rata basis among staff members. This means that if a rider does the complete tour, but a staff member was only involved for a few days or weeks of the tour, then the rider’s tip will go into the pool and the staff member will share in the number of days he or she was en route. And all tips remain anonymous, unless the rider specifically wants to be named, which is not often the case. And your friendly tour director will happily assist if you want to make a contribution via card payment, cash, or electronic funds transfer via your bank.
We thank you for looking after the people who are looking after you!
