Our non-negotiable rules on tour
It is important for everyone’s enjoyment and safety, to abide by our basic rules. By riding with us you confirm that you will assist in keeping yourself everyone else safe, and to talk to one of us if something is bothering you. We can make a plan to ensure we meet your expectations, or at worst, to adjust your expectations. By riding you confirm to understand & abide to the rules below. *And there are many tandems on tour this year – keep to the left, irrespective of bicycle type.
🚗 Open roads
- We ride on public roads (tar or gravel). These roads are open to normal traffic at all times.
- All riders must obey local traffic laws, as well as the instructions of officials, marshals, medics and ride captains.
- We ride courteously and respectfully around other road users – including motorists.
- Not everyone understands cyclists… but we still set the example.
🚑 Support and assistance
- These are tours, not races. There are no prizes and no timing.
- You are welcome to take shortcuts or detours, but once you leave the official route, we are no longer able to monitor or support you.
- If you have a friend, wife and/or mistress in a private support vehicle, please ensure the driver: (A) follows the official route, (B) obeys all traffic rules, (C) drives behind the group, not within it, and (D) remains aware of riders approaching from behind.
- Support vehicles may use the emergency lane (marked by a yellow line) only where this is legally permitted in South Africa.
🔧 Be self-sufficient
- Please make sure that (A) your bike is in good working condition, (B) you are physically prepared for the riding, and (C) your equipment is suitable and functional.
- Every rider is expected to carry at least one spare tube, basic tools, and a pump or inflation device.
- Limited mechanical help may be available from the ride captains, but you are responsible for your own basic repairs.
- Anything extra you would like to carry can be placed in the sweep vehicle (space permitting).
🗺 Know the route
- You are responsible for knowing the day’s route and key points.
- Please make sure you have access to the route information provided before each stage and understand where regroup points and cut-off options are.
- Ride smart, ride together, and help us keep this an enjoyable tour for everyone.
